Research of Individual Components
Irish Moss is a seaweed, Also known as carrageen (from the Irish word carraigín meaning “little rock”) and by its scientific name chondrus crispus, Irish moss is a species of red algae that grows in the cool Atlantic waters along the rocky coastlines of Europe and North America. Irish Moss is quickly becoming a popular super-food among many health-conscious consumers; however, it is far from being a new supplement on the market. Irish moss has long been used in places like Jamaica and Ireland (hence its name) to treat a variety of conditions including the common cold and cough, congestion, dry skin and eczema, and low libido.
Aside from its supplementary use, Irish Moss is also commonly used throughout the food industry as a thickening, gelling, and protein suspending agent. Its high iodine content also makes it popular among both culinary and fitness enthusiasts.
The components of Irish Moss—often associated with its health benefits—namely include its wealth of vitamins and minerals that it possesses. Some of these vitamins and minerals that are found within Irish moss are found below, next to the often-believed benefits of each of them:
  • Vitamin A: eyesight, immune system, acne, bone health
  • Vitamin E: antioxidant
  • Vitamin F: omega 3 and omega 6
  • Vitamin K: bone and blood health
  • Calcium: bone health
  • Magnesium: aid in natural biochemical regulation, exercise performance, blood pressure, anti-inflammatory
  • Potassium: electrolyte that lowers blood pressure, improved bone and muscle maintenance.
  • Sulfur: synthesis of essential amino acids, aids in dandruff reduction, helps with osteoarthritis
  • Iodine: thyroid health, improving cognitive function. NOTE: Unlike some of these other supplements, you can overdose on iodine, making you extremely sick.
Given this wide array of components found within Irish Moss, it has a distinct set of benefits when taken—either orally or mixed in with a drink or food. The most notable of these benefits include anti-viral and health benefits, reduction of congestion and mucous, supporting bone health, and supporting thyroid health. That being said, Irish Moss supplementation is also linked to many general health and anti-inflammatory benefits, with the existence of many vitamins and minerals being present in the supplement.
Bladder Wrack
Bladder Wrack, formally known as Fucus Vesiculosis, is a type of brown seaweed that—much like other variants of seaweed and sea mosses—has large concentrations of iodine. The main components of Bladder Wrack, and the interactions with this supplement have been studied thoroughly in medicine, some benefits are widely known. Although the benefits of these components are widely studied, there are also benefits and uses of Bladder Wrack that are inconclusively supported, such as its relationship with weight loss, arthritis, digestive issues, and obesity. As such, it is widely suggested that Bladder Wrack be taken as a supplement with other compounds, in cases of thyroid health, or in patients in need of antioxidants.
The primary component of Bladder Wrack is iodine. In fact, Bladder Wrack is one of the highest iodine containing variants of seaweeds that is currently known. In addition to this, Bladder Wrack also contains beneficial concentrations of various L-Fucose compounds; which, are often associated with various anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, antiviral, and anti-carcinogenic benefits. Finally, it is understood that Bladder Wrack (along with other variants of brown seaweeds) has concentrated amounts of bioactive sulfated polysaccharides, which are an integral part of dietary fibers.
Based on the active components of Bladder Wrack, the most well-understood benefits of this supplement include:
  • Thyroid Health - Helps in treating thyroid disorders
  • Digestive Health - Aids in weight loss and reduces obesity
  • Helps reduce inflammation and pain
  • Heart Health - Reduces risk of stroke and heart attack
  • Anti-Aging - Eliminates age spots and wrinkles
  • Known to help prevent cancer

Burdock Root, as the name would suggest, comes from Burdock—a species of weeds related to sunflowers and daisies. Although it is native to Europe and Asia, it is grown wildly throughout the United States, and is made widely available for supplementation use. Although this root is sometimes consumed as a food, it is more often used as a supplement, to aid in various areas of health.
With its many benefits, as will be discussed below, burdock root is a very popular natural and holistic medicine. However, people must take care and consideration with sourcing their burdock root; and, taking root in acute quantities. This is because burdock root can become contaminated (with belladonna or deadly nightshade) in the wild, leading to poisoning upon ingestion. Thus, patients must take care to properly source and consume Burdock root, adhering to all product-specific warnings and servings.
There are many different components with Burdock Root, all providing tremendous benefit. Many of these components, however, include sulfur-containing compounds, in addition to polyacetylenes, oils, insulin, and amino acids. Chemically, these components can be broken down into six key chemical constituents, being: arctiin (1), kaempferol (2), adenosine (3), solasonine (4), and spirosl-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyrannosyl-(1 →)-O-β-D-galaetopyranosyl (5). Despite the chemical and other components of Burdock root being very complex, it does have tremendous (and more understandable) benefits.
The integration of the various components of Burdock root provides it with tremendous health benefits for many. Some of the key benefits that it provides includes:
  • A strong source of antioxidants, removing free radicals.
  • Removing toxins from the blood.
  • A natural diuretic (which, is one of the original uses of the drug)
  • Reducing inflammations (very similar to turmeric roots)
  • Improving blood sugar levels and treating diabetes.
